Is Event Photography Creative?
When I told someone recently that I work as a corporate event photographer, he replied with ‘Man, that sounds dry’. I couldn’t disagree more.
On the surface, I guess it could look that way, but I love the challenge of capturing vibrant, creative images in a corporate environment. Of course it’s absolutely vital to follow the brief and pay close attention to your clients’ needs. You don’t want to get too carried away and artsy while covering a business conference, but you can definitely have fun and throw in a bit of creative flair while you’re doing it.
My objective on every event I photograph is to provide a great variety of images they can use to market future events and share with their guests. Once I have the must-haves captured, I enjoy the challenge of capturing some extra, creative images to give my clients that little bit extra.
Covered everything you need of the presenter on stage? Try some shots focused on the AV desk in the foreground, showing the audience and the speaker in the background. got enough candid and group shots during a networking event on a city rooftop venue? I like to step back and include the spectacular cityscape surrounds for some killer vibe images.
I was spoiled for choice at the recent QLD Geospatial Conference & Awards which took place in three venues within the Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre. The light-filled Plaza Auditorium Foyer allowed me to make an easy job of naturally lit candid images, the slightly darker conference space had me making use of some shallow depth of field, while dusk on the Sky Room Terrace made for some cracker shots of the Brisbane City skyline and the spectacularly sparkly new Queens Wharf building.
